BACKGROUND

Following a previous successful project to refurbish the boiler house roof and two plant room roofs at Scarborough General Hospital in North Yorkshire, the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust decided to carry out a roof refurbishment for the hospital’s Anne Wright ward block building.

The existing inverted warm roof build up had reached the end of its service life and weathering over the years had caused water ingress which needed to be addressed as a matter of urgency to ensure the comfort and safety of patients and prevent damage to the building fabric.

REQUIREMENT

It was mission critical for the hospital to remain fully operational at all times throughout the project so the client requested a cold-applied system that would avoid nuisance odours. As a low odour, cold-applied liquid roofing system, Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane Ultra was the ideal response to this stipulation.

The public sector installation also needed to ensure that a best value approach was taken to specifying a system that would provide the best whole-life value and Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane Ultra 25-Year system provides a 25-year guarantee for both material and workmanship.
The new roofing membrane was required as part of a complete roof upgrade, which needed to include new insulation and Sika Liquid Plastics was able to provide a complete warm roof system under a single guarantee.

SIKA LIQUID PLASTICS SOLUTION

Following an audit and condition survey of the roof by Sika Liquid Plastics’ area technical manager, Quality Assured (QA) Contractor, Hodgson & Sayers, was appointed to carry out the project.

The roof refurbishment could not be carried out as an overlay so the Hodgson & Sayers team erected a scaffold walkway to enable safe working practices while the strip out was carried out. This also provided a route for transporting waste material off the roof.

Following strip out of the existing roof build up, the installation team carried out repairs to the parapet walls and prepared the roof substrate. The 130mm Decotherm insulation was installed onto the roof, followed by the Decothane Ultra 25 year system. Channels were created in the new roof coverings to aid drainage.
