Nuffield Hospital, Warwickshire

Short description

The current roof waterproofing system, which was made up of three layers of felt, had failed and was allowing water ingress into the operating theatre below. This was causing a great deal of disruption, especially when operating on patients. There is also a great deal of plant and air handling equipment on the roof with detail work that had been poorly waterproofed using felt. The client required a new waterproofing system that could provide a 20 year guarantee, and be applied with minimum disruption whilst the building was in use.

Pathology Block, Royal Gwent Hospital

The roof of the pathology block had an existing felt roof that had been overlaid but was continuing to cause problems. The system could not be stripped off, as this would cause a great deal of disruption to the everyday workings of the busy department. In addition there were a number of unusual protrusions coming through the roof that would prove difficult to waterproof with a traditional sheet good.

17 St John's Primary School, Southampton Case Studies English pdf 0.31 MB
St John's Primary School, Southampton

Short description

As part of a project to enable the increase of pupil numbers at St John’s Primary School, an existing building was completely refurbished to provide a stand alone nursery. This required the upgrade of its building fabric, including the roof, to meet current building regulations. The existing felt waterproofing had come to the end of its life and inadequate falls meant ponded water had caused the deck to deflect. In addition the use of bonded solar reflective chippings presented its own problems including adding dead weight to the structure and retaining dirt and water, which had lead to organic growth on the roof. Using these type of chippings can also lead to blocked outlets and gutters.
